Welder

Position Summary:
An advanced level Welder-3 position responsible for the welding of basic and complex steel components. This position performs requires exceptional skill, accuracy, efficiency, safe machine and tool operation, while welding. Must have solid reading and comprehension skillset, strong welding experience, as well as knowledge of industry welding standards, codes and symbols.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Weld large structural and non-structural components and complex projects with minimal guidance or mistakes and follows through with non-conformance processes and resolutions.
  • Performs welding on steel parts, assemblies to required tolerances, determines layouts according to drawings and specifications. Monitors and verify quality according to AWS D1.1 welding code standards or procedures.
  • Ensure work is performed according to Documentation, Drawings, Engineering Standards Quality Manual Standards and (GMP) Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Responsible to perform work assignments to the predetermined level of production goals, optimize efficiency and quality practices.
  • Ensure that parts are properly marked with part numbers and job numbers, quantities etc. prior to transferring to shipping or staging area.
  • Ensure to follow the standards for equipment use torching, grinding, deburring, cleaning, drilling, punching, welding, and encourages other to do as well.
  • Responsible to complete all production paperwork which includes but is not limited to. Daily records, detailed work order notes and time spent on jobs production labor ticket to an acceptable level of accuracy.
  • Work in a fast paced environment with fast changing priorities, display a professional attitude and respect working relationships among co-workers at all times.
  • Review jobs and verify that all parts and material are accounted for the job(s) by comparing to work order, drawings, and prints prior to commencing the work. Notify the lead or supervisor when discrepancies are found.
  • Must communicate any and all problems associated with the process which may interfere with your ability to achieve the level of production quantity.
  • Perform all necessary quality checks by examining contents and comparing to work order, drawings, and prints prior to requesting (QC) quality check. 
  • Perform pre and post material preparation, grinding, sanding, scraping, layout, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to welding using various measuring devices and fixtures.
  • Participate in providing proper training to new employees and coach existing employees
  • Set welding parameters to ensure welds meet size, quality, and location of the welds, ensure the welder are set to achieve quality sound welds.
  • Must wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times: hearing protection, vision protection, safety-toed shoes and other appropriate protective clothing.
  • Must assist others in the tasks of fitting and welding and be able to work unsupervised.
  • Ensure that he/she follows the safety rules, safety procedures and all company rules, policies and procedures around his/her department and encourages others as well.
  • Suggest and helps implement cost-saving ideas, optimizes efficiency and quality practices.
  • Make sure that cleanliness of equipment and the work area in his/her department, utilize work space to be most effective and efficient manner.
  • Perform different miscellaneous tasks that are instructed by the supervisor or management which may not be covered in detail within this job description.

 Qualification/Requirements:

  • Preferred education, a high school diploma or GED or equivalent highly desired.
  • Must have experience in a metal processing industry and strong working knowledge with metal fabrication equipment and machinery.
  • Must have a certification and a minimum of 3 years’ experience or a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the welding steel environment.
  • Must have strong working knowledge of FCAW, and GMAW welding wire feed welders, compressed gasses and oxy acetylene etc.
  • Must show proficiency in the operation of all necessary equipment, overhead crane, jib cranes, various power tools, saws, Ironworkers, punches, torches, portable plasma, sanders, sheers, and able to perform minor equipment repairs. 
  • Must be able to communicate and work well with others have good oral/written communication skills and basic math skills.
  • Must have all welding tools for the trade and must be able to read and decipher job order forms.
  • Ability to think creatively and adapt well to change, manage stress without negatively effecting work quality or professional demeanor.
  • Need to be available to work other shifts to support company needs.
  • Able to analyze information gathered in order to identify potential problems or discrepancies.
  • Demonstrates ability to be detail-oriented and pay close attention to accuracy and verbal directions.
  • Must be able to read contract drawings, shop drawings and understand all welding symbols.
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to weld various metals thickness and grades and mastery to welding with (FCAW) Flux-Core Arc Welding, (GMAW) Gas Metal Arc Welding and able to set machines to perform quality, sound welds. 
  • Ability to run Oxy-Fuel, Plasma Arc Cutting, and Carbon Arc Cutting equipment machine and scarfing tip for weld removal with minimal parent metal removal.
  • Has full knowledge of current AWS D1.1 welding codes and procedures which covers structural steel welding and be familiar with consumables.
  • Must be punctual and display good attendance and be able to work at least 40 hrs per week, in addition, be available to work overtime when necessary.
  • Must be able to pass forklift certification and have a valid ODL is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires Squat/kneel, bend/stoop, crawl, twist/turn, grasp, push, reach overhead and outward frequently. Also requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs on regular bases and stand or walk up to 10 hours per day.
  • Occasional work outside in various weather conditions and work near moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and moderate to high noise levels.
