TITLE: Medical Director of Radiology, Long Beach Medical Center

TYPE: Full-Time Employment

COMPENSATION*: $814,000 to $894,000

*The range shown above is an annual base salary for a full-time medical director position and an estimated total compensation (base plus performance-based compensation at 14,000 wRVU). Our compensation models utilize fair market value data specific to your specialty.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Medical Director of Radiology serves as the clinical and administrative leader of the radiology department for Long Beach Medical Center and MemorialCare Medical Foundation. This role combines practicing diagnostic radiology with leadership responsibilities to ensure the delivery of high-quality imaging services, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement in patient care and operational efficiency.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Duties:

  • Interpret a wide range of inpatient imaging studies, including:
    • X-rays
    • CT scans
    • MRI
    • Ultrasound
    • (Optional: Nuclear Medicine, PET, Mammography)
  • Providetimely readsfor emergent (including adult and pediatric trauma), urgent, and routine imaging studies.
  • Communicate critical findingsdirectly to referring physicians or hospital staff.
  • Available by phone during shifts
  • Participate inmultidisciplinary rounds or case conferencesas needed.
  • Collaborate closely with technologists, nurses, and other radiologists.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, imaging protocols, and safety regulations.
  • Document all reports and communications accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR/RIS/PACS).
  • Participate in coverage and weekend/holiday rotations as required.
  • Read time requirements:
    • Stroke: 20 minutes
    • Trauma: 30 minutes

Leadership & Administrative Duties:

  • Physician shall provide an average of 1 day/8 hours of administrative services per week, out of a 5-day work week, or 0.2 FTE. This administrative time shall be exclusive of time spent clinically.
  • Physician shall adhere to any time-keeping practices required by medical group.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for radiology services.
  • Arranges staffing and scheduling models in conjunction with hospital and foundation leadership.
  • Participates in recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and mentoring of new group members.
  • Supervise radiology staff, including radiologists, technologists, and administrative personnel.
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership and other departments to align radiology services with institutional goals.
  • Develop and implement policies, protocols, and quality control measures.
  • Lead departmental meetings and continuing education initiatives.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with accreditation standards (e.g., ACR, Joint Commission)
  • Oversee budgeting, equipment procurement, and resource allocation.
  • Ensure adequate Radiologist physician coverage at all times. Maintain staffing patterns in compliance with American Board of Nuclear Medicine requirements, CDPH and LA County Trauma criteria.
    • Evaluate physician staffing patterns on an ongoing basis to ensure adequate staffing based on volume and acuity, and to meet service standards including access to care and wait times. Work with Medical Centers to resolve any such staffing issue and provide additional coverage as mutually agreed upon.
    • Provide exclusive physician consultation services on a twenty-four (24) hour basis as required for all medical center patients.
    • Meet report turnaround time requirements as defined by the department.
    • Assure STAT imaging results of critical findings are called by the radiologist to the ordering physician within department guidelines.
    • Participate in the department unread exams report program on a daily basis.
  • Participation by the Medical Director or designee to:
    • Conduct Radiology sub-section meetings with staff & physicians as specified in the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and report activities to the Department Chair.
    • Conduct Radiologist meetings with Imaging Administration on a quarterly basis and report activities to the Department Chair.
    • Participate in Imaging Department Committees and as requested by Department Chair on Medical Center Quality Committees, including MemorialCare Best Practice Teams
  • Oversees or delegates oversight (exclusive of Division of Interventional Neuroradiology—DINR) of residents and fellows and complies with ACGME guidelines.
  • Meet as necessary or requested by Director of Graduate Medical Education to review performance against educational goals of the teaching service.

Quality & Performance Improvement:

  • Implement quality assurance and peer-review programs.

  • Analyze imaging utilization trends and outcomes data.

  • Drive initiatives to enhance patient safety, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes.

  • Cooperate with and integrate the performance improvement program with that of the Medical Center and the radiology department.

  • Participate in ongoing efforts to assist in cost containment, standardization of treatment, and utilization review.

  • Assist Medical Center in annual capital and operating budget preparation and achievement of fiscal and operational objectives.

  • Support, participate and be a role model in LEAN efforts within the department and throughout the Medical Center.

  • Participates in efficiency optimization efforts with monthly review of departmental productivity and interventions as necessary.

Regulatory & Compliance:

  • Compliance with Medical Staff Bylaws, Title 22, Title 17, California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Department of Public Health (DHS), Trauma Center Requirements, Centers For Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Conditions of Participation and The Joint Commission (TJC) Standards.

    • All members of the Radiology sections and subsections to include Diagnostic Imaging, CT, MR and Ultrasound are in compliance with Medical Center credentialing requirements.

  • Participate in the department and hospital wide surveys to include Joint Commission, ACR and California Department of Public Health.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited medical school
  • ABR Board Certified or Board Eligible in Diagnostic Radiology
  • Resident of California
  • California medical license (active or eligible)

  • Prior experience in a hospital or inpatient setting

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a high-acuity, fast-paced clinical environment

  • Minimum 5 years of post-residency clinical experience

  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a medical director or departmental leadership role
  • Fellowship training in a radiology subspecialty (Neuroradiology, MSK, Body Imaging)
  • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MHA) or leadership training is a plus

SCHEDULE & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Onsite radiology work with the potential for hybrid hospital-based with teleradiology shifts
  • One of seven radiologists working in a standard scheduled rotation with regular coverage from 11:00 am until midnight; NOTE: On occasion, the start time may vary as early as 7:00 am depending on volumes, absences, and business needs.
  • Time off: 11 weeks off are built into the schedule (i.e., one week off following each week of 4-hour weekday shifts ending at 12:00 am and 6-hour Sat/Sun shifts ending at 12:00 am); Plus, four additional weeks of Paid Time Off (PTO, accrual-based)
  • Additional internal moonlighting available
  • Collaborative environment with support from subspecialty colleagues and administrative staff

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Ability to perform essential radiologist functions

The Medical Director of Radiology shall be responsible to the MCMF Senior Medical Director and Long Beach Medical Center Chief Medical Officer.
